A design guide covers almost all the design essentials, from typography to colors and fonts for all your designing services. Now you have learned about what a brand style guide is.

It's time to understand what Adobe InDesign is? It is an adobe creative cloud graphics design software. Professional designers use it to create design templates featuring various types of graphic design. However, if you want to design a landing page or make cool animated logos, Adobe InDesign, in general, helps in almost every aspect of designing services.

You have indeed known about a brand style guide and Adobe InDesign. It's time to learn why a brand design guide is essential for your business.

The significance of a brand style guide

A brand style guide is one of the essential elements for representing your brand personality. For example, suppose in your office there is a man who always comes in neat and clean clothes while wearing a nice pair of shoes and suddenly he comes in wearing dirty clothes while wearing a slipper. What would be your reaction? Naturally, you get shocked seeing him in that particular attire.

The same goes for the brand style guide. People will appreciate the guide and like your design illustrations if the guide is well-designed. However, a design guide is necessary for your brand to show its mission, vision, and values to its targeted audience. As we have understood why a design guide is essential for your brand, it's time to find out how to design a brand style guide in Adobe InDesign.

Designing a brand style guide using InDesign

You can use a style guide for almost every purpose, like book illustration, presentation graphics, and different digital design services such as designing a digital brochure. Although creating a brand style guide comprises six steps in Adobe InDesign, which are given as follows.

Phase 1: Guideline Inspiration

Every brand in the world has its own set of design rules. You just want ideas for your own style guidelines. It is not possible to produce a well-designed style guideline paper at the eleventh hour. A style guide document is crucial for your branding, from minor products like stationery and letterheads to your brand's marketing materials like logo and flyer design services.

Style guidelines are intended to be useful instructions that instruct you on using visual components of your brand, such as your logo, colors, and how your design will be perceived across various mediums.

These standards, however, are not confined to aesthetically pleasing images. Instead, these designs might convey information about your company's culture and principles.

Phase 2: Designing document

After envisioning your design guide, you must establish your design guidelines in your document in the second phase. However, I will explain everything to you in stages. Through which you can make a new document for your design manual.

1nd step

  1. Launch Adobe InDesign and double-click the file to create a new document.
  2. Determine the number of pages you want to make. I'm working on an eight-page design style guide right now. However, if more pages are required, you can do so.
  3. Check that both sides of the page are unchecked.
  4. Make the page A4 in size.
  5. It's now time to change the margins. In the last set, the bleed to 6 and press the "OK" button.

2nd step

  1. Separate your pages into sections. The front and back covers of the document will be the first and last pages.
  2. After that, import and choose the color swatches you want to utilize. Allow for their opening. On the other hand, the swatch panel may be used to add color swatches manually. FOR EXAMPLE, if I need to utilize red, I'll need to create a new swatch with the following values: C = 10 M = 81 Y = 97 K = 2. Red: C = 10 M = 81 Y = 97 K = 2.
  3. Now is the time to get fonts like brand fonts. To have a more solid font style
  4. Return to your document guide after downloading fonts.

3rd step

  1. Select the rectangle tool from the tool panel on page 1 of your document.
  2. Fill the rectangle with red and move it to the bleed edges.
  3. Open the layer panel, double-click the layer, and choose the layer option while giving it a name.
  4. Select a new layer from the panel dropdown menu and lock the layer.
  5. Change the name of the second layer to content.
  6. Add a watermark with your brand on the bleed rectangular backdrop. Open Adobe Illustrator and pick the logo by ungrouping the vector parts.
  7. In Illustrator, once you've decided on a logo, go to Edit> Copy, return to InDesign and paste it into your page.
  8. At last, set the proportion of the logo by holding shift. You can put it in any place and size on the page.

4th step

  1. Use the type tool (T) to add text to your design guide and drag it into the page.
  2. Choose your font's style, color, and size.
  3. Now, choose the text frame and drag it to where you want it to go. Right-click on control-click, choose transform and rotate it to the required degree.
  4. Once you've performed all of these steps, phase 2 is complete, and you can now copy and paste page 1 to create an identical back cover.

Phase 3: putting together your brand guidelines paper

To create good design standards for your business, you must first clarify your brand structure. A brand guideline includes essential elements like your brand narrative, logo, color palette, typography, and imagery that may be used to develop slogans and give your business a voice.

The most incredible place to start things is with a logo. Then you have to decide on your brand colors and other important brand assets. Finally, your first page provides regulations for your brand assets, as per the guidelines. So, before you create a thorough style guide for your company, you must first create a landing page with all of your brand standards

Step 1

  1. Go to the second page of your manuscript.
  2. Make sure the background layer is locked before moving to the content layer.
  3. Now, go to view and open display rulers, then drag the ruler onto your guide. Make three guidelines to split your page into three equal sections.

Step 2

  1. Then, under the first section, select Edit and then Copy to paste the copied heading from page 1. After copying it, go to Edit> paste to paste it on page 2.
  2. Make any necessary changes to the font color at the conclusion.

Step 3

  1. Using the Type tool (T), create two new text frames, one for the content and the other for the index, and put them anywhere you like.
  2. Pick a font style, size, and color.
  3. Make sure your frames aren't overlapping.

Step 4

  1. Add pages to your information to make it more reader-friendly.
  2. Go to Window > Page and double-click on the A-master page to expand the page panel.
  3. Create a new text frame using the Type tool (T) and place it in the numbered region of each page.
  4. Select Type > to insert unique character > Makers > current page number from the main menu while your cursor is in the text frame.
  5. Drag the color you wish to modify around the screen. You may also alter your site's header by adding a grey header swatch to your pages. Make a swatch of grey. C = 36, M = 28, Y = 27, and K = 0 in grey.
  6. Lower the opacity of the text by going to Objects > Effects > Transparency.

Step 5

  1. If you want these grey text swatches to show on all pages, you have to make your document with A-Master.
  2. If you just want swatches to appear on a particular page, though. You can indicate that you don't want to pick the master page by moving it to the top of the page panel. Then the grey swatch will then be used on the rest of the pages.

  1. You may now observe the actual page from which we wish to begin page 3 and the page 3 to 1 conversion. As a result, we must choose page 3, numbering, and section settings from the panel's dropdown menu.

  1. After that, a window will pop up where you just have to check the bullet of the next page and select ok. Once you have done it, it will make a new section on page 3, listing it as page 1.

Phase 4: Adding Content

After you've produced the front and back covers for your design guide, it's time to start writing content for your chosen content pages. We select pages 4 and 5 to show our logo and usage guidelines during this stage. However, you must first complete the requirements for generating two such pages.

Step 1

  1. Choose your content page and make any necessary changes. Here I am taking two pages, 4 and 5.
  2. Go to Edit and Paste and Place in A-Master. To place x, drag the third guide out. The instructions will appear on almost every page after A-Master is installed.
  3. Select the content page and copy it.
  4. Go back to page 1 and make any necessary content changes.

Step 2

  1. Make a rectangular shape for this page using the background layer.
  2. On the right-hand side, draw a rectangle. You may now color it whatever you like after sketching it.
  3. To compose your content, use the content layer. Then, return to your page content layer while the background layer is locked.

Step 3

  1. Fill in the style guide with the remainder of your page's content.
  2. Add a new text frame to the left and adjust the font size of the content.
  3. Create a text frame on the left side of the page and fill it with information. Using the toolbox and control panel, you may also modify your material's font size and color.
  4. Adjust the positioning of any photos that are pertinent to your message as needed.
  5. You can also create your images with the frame tool.
  6. Make sure the style guide is user-friendly to leave a lasting impression.

The end result after making the changes the page will look like the image below.

Step 4

  1. Start your guideline with a more in-depth explanation and place the material on succeeding pages.
  2. Reposition the logo on page 4 and modify the font color.

Step 5

  1. Fill in the rest of the remaining pages of your design manual.
  2. Create a margin for inserting your logo design using the left side of page 5, the rectangle tool (M), and the stroke tool ().
  3. You may show your brand's color usage standards in the logo by selecting logo images.
  4. You can also provide examples to explain how your logo's usage rule works.
